Facebook Watch will allow Facebook users to view and publish, as well as consume original content created by the social media giant. The company also hopes users will engage with other users around the particular content they enjoy.
We believe it's possible to rethink a lot of experiences through the lens of building community - including watching video," said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "Watching a show doesn't have to be passive. It can be a chance to share an experience and bring people together who care about the same things."
He added: "You'll be able to chat and connect with people during an episode, and join groups with people who like the same shows afterwards to build community."
Facebook Watch will be easily accessible through a tab placed on the page when users log in. The launch will limit the availability of Facebook Watch to select users for now.
Facebook Watch programming will debut Aug. 28.
One of the new Facebook Watch programs is entitled, Bae or Bail, in which "Unsuspecting couples put their relationship and wits to the test as they're thrown into terrifying scenarios," according to the Hollywood Reporter.
There will also be several sports-oriented shows, including Championship Rewind, which is described as a behind-the-scenes story of the Golden State Warriors' 2016-17 championship season.
